2022-2023 Host club - Sanction event policy
In prior years, the Peace Curling Tour promoted and marketed the Tour, promoted, and coordinated team registrations and secured significant sponsorships that enabled us to host a well-funded Peace Curling Championship.

In prior years we called on clubs hosting sanctioned qualifying event to provide a banquet, ice rentals and ancillary costs. The clubs used the Tour Events as an opportunity to secure sponsorships and support for their event and in many instances significant revenues were generated over and above their expenses to the general financial benefit of the club.

In recognition that each of our host curling clubs face financial challenges we will be not expecting host clubs to provide a banquet at tour events (optional and at the discretion of each host club) and additionally we will turn over to each club the $75.00 administrative fee previously retained by the Tour. We will ask that each club agree that the balance of all entry fees collected will be used for the prize pool except for the $75.00 that can be used to offset event costs. Additionally, each host club will be responsible for preparing the draws, registering teams for the Tour, and collecting entry fees.

Each team that qualifies for the Tour Championship will also pay an entry fee of $75.00 to assist with the costs of the Championship.

Teams planning on joining the Tour this year can register their Teams by contacting Colin Griffith at 780 933-9054, or email at Colin46@telus.net

POMEROY GRANDE PRAIRIE CASH SPIEL 2022/2023

PictureTeam Webb- Scott Webb, Tristian Steinke, Jordan Steinke, Andrew Dunbar
Twenty-four teams and Peace Country Curling Fans gathered over the Halloween Weekend for The Pomeroy Hotel Grande Prairie Annual Cash Spiel.
The Competitive Division was won by the Scott Webb team fresh off their excellent showing in the 64-team world’s largest Pinty’s Tour Challenge held last week in Grande Prairie witnessed by 20,000 fans.  They prevailed over an excellent Edmonton Team of Krysta Hilker in the final. Glen Hansen of Edmonton and Jeff Ginter from Dawson Creek both lost the semifinals on last rock in hard fought games. The Finals featured a head-to-head contest of seconds as Hikers Sydney Steinke was pitted against her husband Jordan the second on the Webb foursome. Jordan may not however have the last word or a warm shoulder for a while. The Ryan Norman quartet from Slave Lake, skipped by Carl McCree won the consolation side of the Competitive division in a great matchup with Darryl Veiner of Dawson Creek.

PictureThe Warr Team- Kellan Warr, Doug Rappel, Robert Coates, Darren Schultz
The Challenge Division was won by the Kellan Warr team for the second straight year. They prevailed over the Rob Sibbeston team, which was excellently skipped by Chad Doepker, which included a hard-fought win over his son Varyk in the Friday opener. The Kellan Warr team faced a very tough opponent in the semi-final, the Janelle Dale squad out of Dawson Creek. The Kellan Warr team is skipped by Robert Coates and was formed hastily days prior to last years Cash Spiel. The new team jelled immediately and went on to win last year and repeat again this year. As evident in the picture, one of their numerous sponsors, Tundra Process Solutions is getting maximum exposure by the team in their excellent logoed curling pants and brooms. Matching hats are next on the list. They set a fine standard for other teams too emulate and a fine example of giving your sponsor good value for their investment.

The Curling Centre lounge was decored in Halloween sprit by Layne Luckwell and her excellent team and the first-class Taco night and buffet prepared by Executive Chef Saileesh was enjoyed by all. The wonderful ice conditions created by our world class Ice Maker Roger Miskolzi and new rocks added to the exciting clashes on the ice.

The Hearts and Minds of many Curling fans were highly focused on the 3 Junior Teams contesting for the first ever time in the Challenge Division. Teams skipped by Varyk Doepker and Hayden Young, the great Junior Team from Sexsmith the current Gold Medal holder as the No 1 Girls team in the Province. These two great teams were joined by the youngest team in the Challenge Division, the Brylie Pellerin team, excellently skipped by Brylie the first game and Siobhan McCrisken the last two.  Curlers and fans were excited and focused on every game the junior teams played.
Varyk’s team played exceptionally well and qualified in their first every event for the quarter final playoffs. Their excellent performance was very exciting and playing on the Tour helps in their preparations for Provincial Playdowns and competitions later this year.

E - 2020 -21 Host club - Sanction event policy

In prior years, the Peace Curling Tour promoted and marketed the Tour, promoted, and coordinated team registrations and secured significant sponsorships that enabled us to host a well funded Peace Curling Championship.

The prior years we called on clubs hosting sanctioned qualifying event to provide a banquet, ice rentals and ancillary costs. The clubs used the Tour Events as an opportunity to secure sponsorships and support for their event and in many instances significant revenues were generated over and above their expenses to the general financial benefit of the club.

The Peace Curling Tour collected all entry fees and deducted $75.00 per team to cover Administrative costs of the Tour. The balance of the entry fees turned over to the respective club their costs for hosting the event and for the prize pool.

For this 2020-21 season the Tour will not be generating any significant sponsorship revenue in recognition of the financial challenges faced by their sponsors and key supporting business and individuals. We are planning to hold a Tour Championship this year and fund a significant prize pool from our Reserve Funds.

In recognition that  each of our host curling clubs all face extreme financial challenges we will be not expecting host clubs to provide a banquet at tour event s and additionally we will turn over to each club the $75.00 administrative fee previously retained by the Tour. We will ask that each club agree that the balance of all entry fees collected will be used for the prize pool except for the $75.00 that can be used to offset event costs.

Our team wants to extend a most-sincere congratulations to Glen Godberson and his committee for putting on a tremendous cash spiel with great ice conditions, banquet, and social events. Our whole team is absolutely delighted that our second man, Steve Byrne, was selected by his curling peers as the outstanding socialite of the entire cash spiel.”

The opportunity for our Senior team to learn and develop new skills and abilities and to gain a newfound strategic approach on the Tour has been a wonderful experience, and I am now in a position where I have the opportunity to pass on all of my learnings to the Junior curlers I work with in my own club.”

Renee Sonnenberg, who assisted the Maxwell team, said, “I really appreciate having the chance to share my strategy and tactics with local teams in the same manner that I do with Canada’s elite teams as a National-level coach. PictureTeam Pellerin
In the Baron Oilfield Supply Special Olympics Division, both teams each won a game and had fun. OCTOBER 15, 2019 Press Release

PictureFirst Female Skip to win a PCT Spiel - Delia DeJong
History was made this weekend at the Cora Breakfast and Lunch Cash spiel in Grande Prairie.

Delia Dejong became the first female skip to win a Cash Spiel in the 12 year history of the Pomeroy Inn and Suites Peace Curling Tour. President Colin Griffith stated, “This outstanding win by Delia over a field that included a number of provincial and Canadian championship curlers illustrates not only their great skill and ability but the wonderful opportunity our Tour gives curlers of all ages and genders to win the gold medal.”

PictureFrom left to right: Jaclyn Collins, Stephanie Malekoff, Robbie Maksymetz, Delia DeJong
Delia was supported in her championship run by her proud spouse Rob Maksymetz, Stephanie Malekoff, Jaclyn Collins and Vern Boyd who stepped in for Rob who was called to work for the Sunday Championship Round. They defeated Scott Webb of Peace River in a hard fought final, after overcoming last year's winner Daylan Vavrek in the quarter finals and the Ryan Norman quartet from Slave Lake in the semi-final.

When asked what it felt like to be the First Lady winner, Delia responded “We are pretty honored. We had so much fun this weekend. This newly-minted team melded together from the first rock thrown, and knowing I had the full support of my team allowed me to relax and focus. Everyone on our team curled excellently and in my mind Stephanie Malekoff who moved to third for the Championship round on Sunday was without doubt the MVP in the Cash Spiel.”

PictureMark Heartt didn't end up on the bottom
Mark Heartt of Dawson Creek overcame a superb effort from Cortland Sonnenberg in his bid to repeat as winner of the Cora Breakfast and Lunch Challenge Division at last year’s Cash spiel.

Mark Heartt and his team of John Inkster, Derek Wurnberg, and Oleh Dutka went undefeated in 5 games and this first-year team was delighted with their early success at the Pomeroy Inn and Suites Peace Curling Tour. Mark Heartt added, “This was absolutely the most fun and enjoyment we could have at a Cash Spiel. The ice was excellent, and Roger is also a wonderful ambassador on behalf of his club. We were also very impressed with the curling and conduct of the young Cortland Sonnenberg team.”

PictureWe will get stronger
In assessing their first event of the year the conclusion of the Sonnenberg quartet and their coach was that “we are in the early learning stages and we will be working hard to improve on a number of things we identified at this great event in Grande Prairie.”

The stage is clearly set for some exciting Challenge Division competition at the next four qualifying events starting next with the EnCana Peace River Cash Spiel on October 25-27th, 2019.

PictureTeam Sherrer and Janais didn't get to play mommy in the final
Curlers and teams were attracted from across the north, including the Marla Sherrer team from Lacombe who won the Avonair Ladies Cash Spiel in Edmonton last week. Third on the team is Janais Dejong and their semi final loss to Team Webb ended Delia Dejong’s dream of an all ladies final playing against her daughter.

The Cora Breakfast and Lunch Cash Spiel attracted curlers and teams from across the Peace Country, Province and North including Calgary, Edmonton and Yellowknife.

PictureThe Cassie Rogers team still happy after a 12-hour trip to GP
The Cassie Rogers Junior Ladies team from Yellowknife entered the Challenge Division and enjoyed exciting games and gained a great deal of experience. Cassie Rogers stated “thanks for the hospitality and energy at this weekend’s tour event. We loved getting back on the ice for our first games this season and you ran a great tournament. We learned a lot from all the great curlers and look forward to coming back again. Special thanks to Roger for the great ice”.
